Finn Juhl

Finn Juhl was a Danish architect and designer renowned for introducing a more organic, sculptural approach to furniture design during the golden age of Danish Modern. Unlike many of his contemporaries who emphasized strict functionality and minimalism, Juhl infused his work with a sense of artistry and expression. His most iconic pieces, such as the Chieftain Chair, Pelican Chair, and Poet Sofa, are celebrated for their flowing lines, exquisite craftsmanship, and the way they harmonize form and comfort.
Trained as an architect, Juhl brought a spatial and almost architectural sensibility to furniture, often treating each piece as a standalone art object. He was also instrumental in bringing Danish design to international prominence, particularly in the United States, where he designed interiors for the United Nations headquarters in New York. His pioneering use of teak and his collaboration with master cabinetmakers helped elevate furniture-making to an art form, and his legacy remains a cornerstone of Scandinavian design heritage.
