Hans J. Wegner

Hans J. Wegner was a legendary Danish furniture designer and a central figure in the development of mid-century modern design. Born in 1914, Wegner trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts, which laid the foundation for his deep understanding of craftsmanship and form. He is best known for his iconic chair designs—most famously the Wishbone Chair (also known as the CH24), which exemplifies his philosophy that furniture should be both beautiful and practical. Wegner created over 500 chairs in his lifetime, many of which are considered masterpieces and are still in production today. His work is celebrated for its sculptural elegance, organic forms, and impeccable joinery, often using natural wood to highlight the beauty of the material itself. Wegner’s designs helped define the “Danish Modern” movement and continue to influence contemporary design with their timeless simplicity and functional sophistication.
