Designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara, 1946
Made in Finland by Artek
The Domus lounge, alongside the Domus chair, were originally designed by Tapiovaara for the public spaces at the Domus Academica's student housing complex in Helsinki. When first produced, it was not possible to produce the seat and back element from one piece. It wasn't until recently that the Domus lounge is being produced as Tapiovaara originally designed. A classic Scandinavian design, the Domus series consists of lounge, arm and side chairs offered in a variety of finish options as well as upholstered.
Tapiovaara was a great admirer of Alvar Aalto's work and wanted to create products based on the same ideological premises. He embraced the principle of social equality of functionalism, and felt that architecture was the starting point of his design work.
