Ranked as one of Sarasota's top 10 prettiest homes, the Cooney House, built in 1967 by architect, Tim Siebert, has recently received some well-loved and sensitive restoration by Jane and Bill Knapp. This home has been recognized for its simplicity in classic modern design and is an AIA "Test of Time" award winner. During Soft Square's visit to the now "Knapp House," Jane gave us a tour of the famous home that featured select items from the Soft Square showroom.
The Knapp's moved into the famous Cooney House in September 2014 after a 13 month renovation. Recently, Siebert visited the carefully remodeled home and loved what he saw.
As lover's of modern homes, the Knapp's appreciated everything this house already had to offer. They worked with Bluewater Construction and contractor Clyde Alstrom, to renovate the space. Walking through the home it was obvious their sensitivity to its classic design was taken seriously.
"It's so elegant in its simplicity," said Jane in regard to the architecture, "to cram too much would do such a disservice to this house." So, the Knapp's said farewell to some beloved paintings because this house had limited wall-space due to its unique footprint and glass walls. "Less is more." said Jane.
A home's open floor plan can prove to be a difficult task for a cohesive design, however, the Knapps were able to incorporate two sitting areas side by side with natural ease and flow throughout the well-lit space.
Much like a museum, each space offers an unique interactive experience. Keeping with the original footprint, the renovation included enclosing the patio to create a larger living space, to which a Steinway piano now sits and both occupants of the home take lessons on.
From the dining room table and suspension light, to the living room sofa and lounge chairs, Soft Square has had the pleasure and privilege of seeing some great pieces go to loved modern home. Just like the timeless architectural design of the home, the furniture pieces enhance the living space within and make the home very livable.
